Alternative Gifts

Congress has made the provision for IRA charitable rollover gifts permanent, which allows individuals age 70 1/2 or older to make tax-free gifts totaling up to $100,000 from a traditional IRA account directly to a nonprofit.  Making an IRA charitable rollover gift is an advantageous way to support Magdalena House while satisfying your minimum required distribution and excluding the distribution from your gross income — a benefit regardless of whether you itemize deductions.  Contact your IRA plan administrator to make a gift from your IRA to us.  Your IRA funds will be directly transferred to Magdalena House.

If you contribute long-term appreciated securities directly rather than selling them and donating the proceeds of the sale: 

• You may be able to claim the full market value of donated shares as a charitable deduction on your income tax.
• You may be able to avoid paying capital gains tax on the increase in the value of your shares given to Magdalena House.

Contribute

If you have a Donor Advised Fund, you can ask your fund to make a grant (distribution) directly to Magdalena House.  A donor-advised fund is like a charitable investment account.  It can allow you to realize immediate tax advantages and then support charitable organizations you care about through that account over time.

Many employers match their employee's charitable gifts and some companies match gifts made by retirees and spouses.  You may be able to double or even triple the amount of a contribution by taking advantage of a company's matching gift benefit!  To find out if your company has a matching gift policy, please contact your company's Human Resources office. Some companies with local San Antonio employees that match gifts to Magdalena House include Aetna, Alexion, Exxon Mobil, Medtronic, Traveler's, USAA and Wells Fargo.
